High accuracy in the examination of spontaneous or provocative nystagmus is essential in modern vestibular diagnostics. The test for nystagmus with Frenzel glasses is performed in a darkroom or in a thoroughly darkened room. Frenzel glasses have an internal lighting module that cuts off the subject's visual contact with the surroundings, eliminating any fixations that inhibit nystagmus. The examiner can then carefully observe how the patient's brightly lit eyes move under the magnifying lenses of the glasses while looking forward and diagnose any nystagmus.

High-plus lenses disable fixation and therefore allow testing for spontaneous nystagmus.

+15 D glasses provide magnification to facilitate the assessment of eye movements.
